2 Chronicles 12:13-16 (NKJV)
13 Thus King Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem and reigned. Now Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king; and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put His name there. His mother’s name was Naamah, an Ammonitess.
14 And he did evil, because he did not prepare his heart to seek the Lord.
15 The acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all their days.
16 So Rehoboam rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David. Then Abijah his son reigned in his place.
The primary duty of man is to seek and worship the Lord with all his heart. Unfortunately king Rehoboam seemed not to acknowledge this truth, hence he did not walk in the footstep of his father David. Could this be as result of his maternal background? The Word of God clearly stated; “and his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonite” (vs. 13). Rehoboam’s tactless reply to the ten tribes of Israel in 2 Chron. 10:14-16 caused the division of the kingdom of Israel. Again king Rehoboam’s continuous war with Jeroboam, the king of break-away Israel shows that he was not seeking the Word of God to obey its commands. Note, the conclusion of HEAVEN on king Rehoboam was; “And he did evil …” (v. 14a).When a man fails to seek the Lord with all his heart, his ways will be filled with troubles and contentions with other men. And such a person will never enter into His rest as God had promised.
Beloved, stop and examine your ways today. Have you truly prepared your heart to seek the Lord? What is God’s testimony about you and your family? Are you habitually indulging in evil? Surely the testimony of your life or that of your family will change for good if only you and your household will take a decision to daily seek the Lord with all your heart. To seek the Lord begins with repentance from sin and commitment to life of faith in Christ Jesus. This means that the Word of God becomes the guide for your convictions and actions as you walk closely with the Holy Spirit. Finally “seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near” (Isaiah 55:6).
Prayer: Lord, I cannot succeed in life without you, therefore teach me to always seek you and find rest for my soul in Jesus Name. Amen.
