HE PROMISES TO BLESS YOU

Sunday January 8

(Epiphany 1)

Psalm 89: 19-30 (ESV)

19 Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,and said: “I have granted help to one who is mighty; I have exalted one chosen from the people. 20 I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him, 21 so that my hand shall be established with him;my arm also shall strengthen him. 22 The enemy shall not outwit him;the wicked shall not humble him. 23 I will crush his foes before him and strike down those who hate him. 24 My faithfulness and my steadfast love shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. 25 I will set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers. 26 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’ 27 And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. 28 My steadfast love I will keep for him forever, and my covenant will stand firm for him. 29 I will establish his offspring forever and his throne as the days of the heavens. 30 If his children forsake my law and do not walk according to my rules.

God loves all He created. He bestows His blessings on those who please Him. David was such a man. But this does not mean that David was the best of men. He was beloved, by God's grace. Look again at the passage you read, to see how marvellously He elaborately blessed David - a man after His heart and whom He found (Psalm 89:20). These blessings which He distributes as He wills are those who please Him.

You are also part of this people of God. They are for signs and wonders. The blessings of David are pointing to eternity, not to the mundane and temporal riches or glories of this life. If it was temporal, he would have had no reason to boast. After all he is dead, and is only being remembered. But as verses 35-37 show, this blessing is spectacular because it lasts forever. And this is what gives every child of God hope.If you are truly a child of God, this truth should be cause for great rejoicing. As Jer. 29: 11 says, God has plans to give you a future and hope. So no matter the situation, the blessings that await you are greater than the problems that assail you now. So, move on undaunted.

Prayer: Thank you Lord God for all the innumerable blessings You have in store for me and for Your plans for my life. Help me to fulfil my calling as I look forward to enjoying eternity with You.
